Feather Stitch Family

About the Feather Stitch Family

The Feather Stitch Family is a distant cousin of the Blanket Stitch Family. They are technically the same, with both of them being looped stitches. It also relates to the Fly Stitch Family by catching loops to make continuous ‘V’ like formations. Generally, we can say that these three families of stitches are cousins and differ only slightly in how they are executed.

Feather Stitch Family in Embroidery

The Feather Stich Family is very decorative, especially if teamed with any other complementing stitch. It is fantastic to create quick and easy botanical structures. This family of stitches is used fondly in Crazy Quilting. It provides so much scope to combine them with embellishments like beads and shells. Feather Stitch is also a popular one in Smocking.

Embroidery is my saving grace in life. Thank you for a truly AMAZING site. I have studied traditional Japanese embroidery, crewel, metal work (both Japanese, traditional Anglican and a loser modern style), and needle painting. When I happened upon your site I fell in love with my favorite art form all over again. Your stitch guides are extensive as well as the best, clearest and most useful I have ever seen. There are stitches in here I have never heard of before and can’t wait to play with them. As a long time member of EGA I look forward to sharing this site with my fellow needle artists at our next chapter meeting. Well done and many thanks for this treasure of a resource!
