Buttonhole Filling Stitch

Buttonhole Filling is also known as

Langettenfüllstich [DE].

How to do the Buttonhole Filling

Buttonhole and Blanket Stitches can be used for fillings too! This tutorial will show how to work over a leaf pattern and fill it using the Blanket Stitch technique. The closer you work, the denser the stitch will be. The final result gives me a kind of a knit effect.

You need to know the Blanket Stitch to continue with this tutorial. I will illustrate this stitch in a leaf shape. This stitch is best worked from bottom to top, or from a broader end to the tapering end of the motif.

Fig 1: Start by making a row of Back Stitches on the broader end of the leaf. This will lay the foundation for the Blanket Stitches.Fig 2: Now, come out from B which is the one end of the stitched row. Pass the needle under the first Back Stitch and pull the needle out with the thread under it. Continue
the process for each Back Stitch.
Fig 3: When you reach the end of the row, take the needle in through A and come out from C, a point just a little above A and on the leaf outline. Loop the thread as you would for Blanket Stitch and pull the needle out.Fig 4: Work the next row of Blanket Stitch, passing under each of the previous stitches. Do not pluck the fabric underneath and mind the tension of the stitches.
Fig 5: When you reach the end of the row, take the needle in through B and come out from D. Continue
the process to fill the entire leaf pattern. Do not pull the needle out too much or leave it too loose.
Fig 6: Finish up by anchoring the last stitch at the tip of the leaf.
