Stitch Flowers: Leaf Stitch

Stitch flowers using the Leaf Stitch.

The Leaf Stitch is not only a great stitch for leaves, but for flowers as well! I found the perfect flowers to apply this stitch to – the soft and delicate wildflowers, Bluets. Their petals are leaf-shaped with a delicate center line. I chose a slight off- white color for the flowers. Come and join me in stitching this beautiful flower.

Fig 1: Get your fabric, hoop, and threads ready. I have outlined the petals and marked the center line on each petal.Fig 2: Start working the Leaf Stitch on one side of the petal, then the other side.
Fig 3: The finished petals of the flower will look like this. I had used 3 strands of thread, but I feel even two strands would fall better on the fabric.Fig 4: I filled the center with French Knots.
Fig 5: All three flowers are done!Fig 6: I do the stems and leaves with the Outline Stitch.
Fig 7: The flowers are finished and look like this.

TIPS to make your flowers beautiful:

  1. Select flowers with a leaf-shaped petal, to work the Leaf Stitch perfectly.

Hola.

Sarah: That would be a brilliant idea, Dolores! Yes, cover the whole area with leaf stitch and use a darker thread to work blanket stitch to form the ribs. It should work. Keep the thread at 3 strands for the blanket stitch…this will keep it from looking uneven. Anyway, work on one leaf first and see how it comes out. Sometimes, we just need to test the stitches!
Please let me know once done, or better still, share a picture! 😊

I would like to purchase the e-book. I know I will need to download and print it out on my printer. Will I be able to print it out with an inkjet printer? It’s not a new model but it is in good shape and it’s a Hewlett Packard?? It’s a 2540 model.

    • Hey Marion. Thank you for your interest in Sarah’s Hand Embroidery eBook. We have made the eBook customized for digital devices, such that you can use it in your phone, tablet, kindle, ipad, laptop or such devices. You can also print the book if necessary. Test printing a few pages with your Inkjet Printer and then proceed to print the rest of the pages—it should work!

Love using Oliver Twist threads. I stitched the four seasons in “rust” from the 6 strand cotton range. Here is “winter”.
