Stitch Flowers: Coral Stitch

Stitch flowers using the Coral Stitch.

The Coral Stitch is a straight stitch with periodic knots over it. It is usually used for making outlines and sometimes for making fillings. I figured that it will be great to apply on a rose pattern. The pattern itself is straightforward to draw. It is made of one continuous straight line going round in imperfect circles, sometimes overlapping and growing slowly, marking the petals. The Coral Stitch will follow this path. So easy! This stitch is flat laying, is sturdy, and can be stitched over any kind of fabric. If you are looking to embroider on a fabric that requires washing, this stitch can be it!

Fig 1: Get your fabric, hoop, and threads ready. Draw the flowers with a single continuous line making concentric spiral ‘circles’ that occasionally overlap each other.Fig 2: Start stitching the Coral Stitch around the circle. Begin from the center.
Fig 3: Pluck only a small amount of fabric each time. Do not worry about intersecting another stitch.Fig 4: Try to make a stitch on turns and ‘elbows’ in the pattern to help with the turns. End the stitch by taking the needle in through the fabric and knotting it at the back.
Fig 5: A finished rose will look like this. I have used 6 strands of thread for a thicker appearance. You can try using wool too.Fig 6: All three flowers are finished. A dash of green will blow life into the frame.
Fig 7: I make the leaves with a bright green variegated thread. They are done in Fly Stitch.Fig 8: The pattern is now finished!

Tips

  1. Use variegated threads- it will make the stitch look prettier.
  2. Pluck as little fabric as you practically can during the stitch.
  3. Don’t worry about overlapping stitches- just follow the drawn line as it is.
  4. Use 6 strands of thread for thicker and prominent lines.
