Stitch Flowers: Woven Trellis Stitch

Stitch flowers using the Woven Trellis Stitch.

The Woven Trellis Stitch can be fun to use for filling flowers. Here I have used it to make flowers inspired by the wild tulips—and spruced it up with pistils. The variegated threads are fun to work with and fit perfectly for the weaving. Come and try this easy stitch.

Fig 1: Get your fabric, hoop, and threads ready. Mark the outline for the flowers. The flowers are made best if they have a broad top and narrower bottom.Fig 2: Start stitching the Woven Trellis. Begin by making the base stitches on the sides, and then do the ones on the inside. I have used 4 stitches for the base.
Fig 3: When you weave the stitch between the base stitches, do not pull it too much to avoid spoiling the shape of the flowers. Occasionally check the shape and give the weaving the required nudge and pull.Fig 4: All the flowers are finished. Some have a more prominently elongated middle as the base stitches were longer.
Fig 5: I added the Pistil Stitch to the flowers. The stems and leaves are done using the Outline Stitch.Fig 6: The flowers are done. Using variegated threads for such stitches are fun.

TIPS to make your flowers beautiful:

  1. While making the base Straight Stitch for these flowers, make the sides first and then work the inside spokes. This helps in keeping judging the distance and keeping a good angle.
  2. Do not pull the weaving too tight. But, do not leave it too loose either. Keep the right tension to retain the shape of the flowers.
  3. Nudge the weaving occasionally to check the shape of the flower.

Sarah Are these tutorials in your e books? or in your “big” book of stitches? Also where are the full size designs or are they just for demo purposes? They are so pretty and I am terrible at freehand drawing!
Thank you for your beautiful work i look forward to your projects!!!

      Hi Yvonne,
These patterns are not included in our big eBook. I drew these patterns for demo purposes only. But, you have given me a great idea to include the patterns on the website. It might take a little time, but I will try to do it anyway. Thank you! 🙂

What a beautiful stitch! Thank you for showing how to do it. Just to look at it, I wouldn’t have tried it thinking it was too complicated to do. I know I can do this stitch after seeing how you did it.
