How to do the Double Lock Stitch

The Double Lock Stitch is an addition or top-up to the Lock Stitch. While the Lock Stitch is made by working the Cable Stitch technique on one side of the row, the Double Lock Stitch is made by working the Cable Stitch on both sides of the row, giving it a totally different appearance. It is highly decorative and can be used wonderfully over border patterns and thick lines.


Fig 1: Start by laying a foundation of straight stitches. Come out from one corner of the foundation row and pass the needle under the first stitch as shown. Keep the thread above while doing so. .	Fig 2: Next, pass the needle under the next straight stitch, but this time, keep the thread below. This is a pattern we follow in the Cable Stitch technique.

Fig 3: Repeat by passing the needle under the third stitch with the working thread above.	Fig 4: Continue this process of passing the needle under each stitch without plucking the fabric. Keep the thread above and below the needle for every alternate passing.

Fig 5: Finish off the stitch by taking in the needle in through the fabric close to the last foundation stitch.	Fig 6: Next, work the Lock Stitch on the other side of the row.

Fig 7: To make it look attractive, make sure you coordinate the stitches to the existing ones.	Fig 8: A finished row looks like this. Hardly looks like a member of the Stem Stitch!
