How to do Bead Embroidery with the French Knot

The French Knots can be used to pin down sequins and beads on the fabric. It is similar to attaching sequins using the Stab Stitch method, only here, we are using the knots instead of the beads on the sequins. This is a great technique when you want to place sequins and beads in an isolated manner to create textures and other interesting patterns. The only thing to make sure of is that your thread size should complement the size of the hole of your bead or sequin. If the knots formed are too small, the embellishments might just slip out! So, decide the thickness of the thread based on the knot it will form in relation to the size of the hole. I have used size#8 pearl cotton, which is kind of equal to 3 strands of cotton embroidery floss. The beads are 3mm.

Sample 1: With sequins

Fig 1: Come out with your needle at a point in your fabric. Slip in a sequin.Fig 2: Next, wrap the thread around the needle twice.
Fig 3: Keep the wrapped thread pulled while you go back in through the same hole.Fig 4: You just made a French Knot to sit over the sequin.
Fig 5: This is a cluster of sequins pinned down using the stitch.

Sample 2: With beads

Fig 1: Come out with your needle at a point in your fabric. Slip in a bead.Fig 2: Next, wrap the thread around the needle twice and put the needle back into the hole of the bead.
Fig 3: Keep the wrapped thread pulled while you pull out the needle to form the French Knot.Fig 4: A cluster of beads pinned down by French Knots looks really pretty and cute.

I’ve used French knots for sequins before but I never thought about using them with beads. Love that idea 🙂
