Laced Cretan Stitch

This is a simple, decorative variation of the Cretan stitch. Use it on borders or just as innovative filling, it will look neat.

You need to know the Cretan stitch to be able to continue with this tutorial.

Fig 1: First, start by making a base of Cretan stitch. Then, from the left corner, using a contrasting colored thread, bring the needle out and start lacing between the Cretan stitches as shown.Fig 2: Go up and down the stitches without touching the fabric below.
Fig 3: A finished row of this stitch would look like this.

  15. Hello Sarah!
    Your site is wonderfull!
I make finnish folkdresses for living and we try to make them just like they were done in 18th and 19th centurys. Right now I have a little problem with one embroidery that is on the edge of shirt collar. It looks like chain stitch on the right side, but it goes round the edge and there’s something that looks like blanket stitch. I believe, it’s not those made in two steps, but somehow done at ones. I see You have done a lot of work with chain stitches and was hoping You could maybe help me a little. I have close photos of this and if You think You could help me, would you send me e-mail, so I could send You those photos? Sorry about my bad english, I hope You understand…

      Dear Soja,

Thank you. It is very impressive and interesting to know that you make Finnish folk dresses and that too the traditional way! You must be one bundle of rare talent.

I can picture the stitch you are telling me, but not too sure if I know the stitch unless I see it. What you can do is, upload the picture of the stitch here (use the function just below the comment box). Even if I am not able to figure out the stitch, there might be someone else who can help.

Please tell me what are the materials i need. and where i can buy those…I am beginner to this class.. Please help to know…

    • sarah says:

      Dear Geetha,

You need some embroidery threads, embroidery needle (normal needle with longer eyes), and cotton fabric to begin embroidery. Check out with some ‘variety’ shop for the needle and thread.

  17. Love this stitch! Thanks, Sarah. I’ll use it in my new doll!!! How exciting!
