Weave Stitch Family

About the Weave Stitch Family

These stitches often need a foundation over which the weaving is made. The foundation is made using straight stitches to cover the pattern area or a particular shape. Then, the weaving is worked over these stitches, without going through the fabric to create beautiful texture and fillings. The effect of all these stitches is a more raised profile and an embossed look. These stitches are used in various embroideries, including Stumpwork, Needle Weaving, Kamal Kadai, and Chicken Scratch, to mention a few.

These stitches are good to make flower and leaf patterns with fillings. Some stitches may seem complicated, but generally, they are enjoyable to work with. The foundation is laid using the Straight Stitch in various lengths and numbers. You can get more creative by using other stitches as the foundation, like the Lazy Daisy Stitch, the Pistil Stitch, or any other stitch that gives you a foundation of Straight Stitches to work between.
